When Apple unveiled AirPods Max 2 on Monday, the company was unable to specify a release date, simply telling customers its new high-end headphones will launch “early next month.” It’s very unusual for Apple to not reveal when its own product will reach customers. But it turns out the headphones are waiting for Apple software that’s still in development.
Here’s what’s going on.
Why Apple doesn’t know AirPods Max 2 release date
When Apple recently announced the MacBook Neo, M5 MacBook Air, iPhone 17e and more, it told shoppers the products would hit store shelves on March 11. That’s typical. Of course, the Mac-maker knows when it’s going to introduce new products.
But the AirPods Max 2 is a weird exception. All Apple can say is that the headphones will arrive sometime in early April.
The reason Apple can’t specify an exact date is revealed in a footnote on the AirPods Max 2 product page.
“Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods Max 2 with the latest firmware when paired with an Apple Intelligence–enabled iPhone running iOS 26.4 and later,” says the footnote (emphasis ours).
iOS 26.4 isn’t available yet. The current version is iOS 26.3, which debuted in February. The follow-up is in beta testing, but the launch remains weeks away.
How many weeks? Not even Apple knows exactly. It depends on how fast Apple’s developers can remove all the bugs from it.
Another beta version is expected this week, which might be followed by a release candidate a week later, and the final version a week after that. But the process could take longer if unexpected problems crop up, as they so often do.
That’s why Apple can’t say at this point exactly when it will introduce iOS 26.4. And also why it can’t give an exact AirPods Max 2 release date.
A bigger question – and one without an answer – is why Apple decided to announce AirPods Max 2 now, with the launch still so far away. It could have waited.
More about Apple’s new premium headphones
Apple’s AirPods Max 2 arrive as the first major update to the company’s premium over-ear headphones since their 2020 debut, focusing on improved performance and a new wave of intelligent features rather than a redesign.
The new model is powered by Apple’s H2 chip, enabling up to 1.5 times better active noise cancellation along with cleaner, more detailed sound. Transparency mode has also been refined to sound more natural, while a new high-dynamic-range amplifier and enhanced spatial audio aim to deliver a richer, more immersive listening experience.
Beyond audio upgrades, AirPods Max 2 bring several software-driven features previously limited to AirPods Pro. These include Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation, alongside a headline addition: Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence for real-time language translation.
And Live Translation depends on the as-yet-unreleased iOS 26.4, as noted.
AirPods Max 2 retail for $549.
